“While I served our Nation as a Chaplain and Colonel in the U.S. Army, Dr. Walter Paschall directed my need for LASIK surgery....

His personal involvement in my situation resulted in my being completely “glasses free”, not an easy task for a “late fifties” year old patient.”

What is Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)?

Advanced Surface Ablation, in its current state, is a relatively new laser vision procedure that has additional safety features over LASIK making it an ideal alternative for some patients. Instead of cutting a flap on the front of the cornea, the surface skin cells (epithelium) are removed. The corneal surface is then treated with the laser and covered with a bandage contact lens, unitl the surface has healed.

What can ASA treat?

ASA removes tissue from the cornea to treat low to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

ASA is a better choice for those who:

  • want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts
  • are over 18 years of age, and do not use bifocal glasses or reading glasses
  • have had a stable eye prescription for at least one year
  • have no health issues affecting their eyes
  • have large pupils and may need a larger optical zone
  • have corneas too thin for LASIK
  • want to avoid LASIK flap complications
  • who want to minimize dry eye problems after surgery

For some, LASIK is not an option for vision correction.  Due to certain conditions, ASA is an alternative for those who:

  • cannot have LASIK because of eye pressure problems (glaucoma)
  • cannot have LASIK because of corneal dystrophy problems
  • do not want LASIK because it requires a microkeratome (a precision surgical instrument with an oscillating blade designed for creating the corneal flap in LASIK or ALK surgery)

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) is a procedure which uses a laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye), after a flap of the superior 20-25% of the cornea has been created with a blade or laser.

How do I choose which vision correction surgery is right for me?

In collaboration with your ophthalmologist at Agape Eye Care & Laser Center, a thorough review and evaluation of your particular condition will be assessed and the proper options for vision correction discussed with each individual patient in order to make the most appropriate decision regarding surgery for the individual patient.
